Karel Appel (1921-2006). Abstract Figure – Mixed Media on Cardboard
A powerful and expressive composition depicting an abstract figure, built through bold black outlines and spontaneous areas of blue, red, ochre, white and earthy brown. The simplified forms and energetic handling give the work a strong, almost primitive character, while the visible brushstrokes create a lively sense of movement.
Description
Karel Appel was one of the central artists associated with the CoBrA movement. His work is recognised for its freedom, vibrant colour and instinctive, highly expressive forms.
We chose this work for its remarkable presence and directness. Despite its relatively intimate size, the composition feels monumental and immediately captures the viewer’s attention.
The work is presented in what may possibly be its original frame. The original passe-partout was badly damaged and could not be preserved; it has therefore been replaced, together with the backing board. These interventions relate only to the framing and protection of the artwork.
