Charles Viane (1876–1939). Impressionist River Landscape – Oil on Panel
This atmospheric river landscape by Belgian artist Charles Viane depicts a quiet, idyllic riverbank lined with slender, dark trees. Their elongated forms are softly reflected in the still water, creating a beautiful sense of depth and tranquillity.
Description
We chose this particular work for its remarkably sophisticated palette. Moss greens, deep lavender tones, pastel blues and touches of soft cream are applied with loose, expressive brushstrokes, giving the landscape freshness and movement. The composition feels peaceful yet vivid, capturing the changing light and subtle colours of the Belgian countryside with a distinctly Impressionist sensitivity.
Charles Viane was a Belgian painter, draughtsman, printmaker, writer and historian closely connected with the artistic and literary life of Uccle. He co-founded the literary journals Le Thyrse and L’Exil and was also actively involved with the artistic circle Uccle Centre d’Art, where he exhibited regularly. His subjects included views of Uccle and its surrounding countryside, the Meuse Valley, the Belgian coast and Paris. In addition to his paintings, he produced numerous etchings and published poetry and historical writing. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held in Uccle in 1942. The painting is presented in a substantial carved wooden vintage frame with a rich gold-toned finish and darker ornamental details. The frame was added more recently and complements the cooler colours of the landscape beautifully, giving the relatively intimate painting a strong and elegant presence.
