Gerard Post Greve (1913–1990). Harbour with Fishing Boats – Oil on Board
A beautiful and atmospheric harbour scene by Gerard Post Greve (1913–1990), depicting a group of fishing boats resting quietly beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky.
Description
Post Greve was a 20th-century Dutch painter whose work includes landscapes, harbour scenes and still lifes. His paintings are characterised by expressive brushwork, rich surfaces and a distinctive, often subdued palette.
The composition is built through bold, confident brushstrokes and a distinctive palette of cool greys, muted blues, deep browns and subtle touches of red and green. The heavily worked surface gives the painting texture and movement, while the reflections in the water create a quiet and slightly moody atmosphere.
We chose this particular work for its expressive character and beautifully restrained colours. Despite its modest dimensions, the strong vertical lines of the masts and the energetic handling of the paint give the composition a remarkable sense of presence.
The painting is presented in the vintage gilded wooden frame shown in the photographs, finished with a light linen liner. Its softly aged gold tones complement the muted palette of the painting particularly well.
