Dutch School, 18th Century . Portrait of Martinus van Toulon – Oil on Copper
A refined miniature portrait depicting a distinguished Dutch gentleman, elegantly dressed in a deep blue coat, white shirt and black cravat.
Description
His powdered hair, composed expression and the softly suggested landscape in the background are characteristic of late 18th-century portraiture.
The reverse preserves an old engraved portrait bearing the inscription “Mr. M. van Toulon, Raad enz. te Gouda.” This provides a strong clue that the sitter is Martinus van Toulon (1736–1818), a prominent civic official who served as councillor, alderman, mayor and bailiff of Gouda. The surviving engraving presents the same sitter with closely comparable features and hairstyle, supporting the traditional identification.
We chose this small portrait for its remarkably intimate character and delicate execution. Despite its modest dimensions, it has a strong and dignified presence.
The painting is presented in a simple oval frame that complements its elegant format.
