French Empire Frame, circa 1810–1820
A particularly beautiful and elaborate Empire frame dating from approximately 1810–1820.
Description
Its architectural profile is enriched with moulded ornaments: palmettes, rosettes, scrolling foliage and symmetrical floral arabesques.
The unusual density and delicacy of the decoration reveal influences from the broader Greco-Roman and Italian Neoclassical ornamental tradition, interpreted here in the formal, balanced language of the Empire period. The fan-shaped corner ornaments and finely patterned inner borders give the frame an especially elegant and distinctive character.
We believe the present bronze-gold finish is not original. Nevertheless, it has aged beautifully, developing a deep, warm patina that complements the historic surface and gives the frame considerable presence. A complex, refined and highly decorative period frame with genuine historical value.
Style: Empire, with Greco-Roman and Italian Neoclassical influences
Materials: Wood with moulded ornaments and a later bronze-gold finish
Frame dimensions inside: 47.5 × 38.5 cm
Frame dimensions outside: 60.5 × 52.5 cm
Depth: 6.5 cm
Period: Circa 1810–1820
Condition: Excellent antique condition. The colour is believed to be later rather than original, but it has developed a gorgeous patina. Minor signs of age and wear remain visible, consistent with its period, without affecting the frame’s structural or aesthetic integrity.
