Marie Hill-Bergmans (1889-1947). Belgian School, Early 20th Century. Still Life with Flowers – Oil on Canvas
A charming floral still life depicting a generous bouquet arranged in a decorated ceramic vase.
Description
Deep blues, violet, soft pink and creamy white emerge beautifully against the warm, muted background. The flowers are painted with lively, expressive brushwork and a rich, textured surface, while the restrained setting gives the composition an intimate and timeless character.
We chose this work for its beautifully balanced palette, generous handling of the paint and quiet domestic atmosphere. The recent professional cleaning has revealed the freshness and depth of its original colours.
Marie Hill-Bergmans was born in Ghent in 1889 and was primarily known as a pianist. In 1913 she married the Belgian painter Jacques Bergmans, with whom she shared a culturally rich and artistic environment. Paintings attributed to Marie appear to be relatively uncommon, making this signed still life particularly interesting.
