Otto Dix (1891–1969). German School, 20th Century. Still Life with Sunflowers – Watercolour on Paper
An important and highly distinctive watercolour by the celebrated German artist Otto Dix, depicting a group of sunflowers arranged in a finely decorated blue-and-white ceramic vase.
Description
Although best known for his uncompromising portraits and incisive depictions of German society, Dix also produced a smaller and particularly fascinating body of still lifes. Within this rarer aspect of his oeuvre, the present watercolour reveals a quieter and more contemplative side of the artist.
The composition is constructed through confident drawing, translucent washes and carefully balanced passages of yellow, blue, olive green and smoky grey. The expressive sunflowers possess an almost sculptural presence, while the delicately ornamented vase introduces a refined decorative counterpoint. The subdued background and restrained palette give the work an intimate, slightly melancholic atmosphere characteristic of Dix’s penetrating vision.
We chose this watercolour for its exceptional character and for the unusual place it occupies within the artist’s body of work. Its combination of expressive strength, sensitivity and quiet tension makes it far more than a conventional floral still life.
The is preserved in excellent vintage condition, with a beautiful natural patina consistent with its age.
It is presented behind museum glass in a monumental solid-oak frame dating from the end of the 19th century. The frame’s architectural construction, impressive depth and richly aged surface give the ensemble the commanding presence of a museum piece. The contrast between the delicacy of the watercolour and the powerful proportions of the oak frame is particularly successful.
