Antonius Henricus Koster (1913–1990). Dutch School, 20th Century. Winter on the Singel with the Koepelkerk, Amsterdam – Oil on Canvas
A wonderfully atmospheric winter view of Amsterdam’s Singel canal, with the distinctive dome of the Ronde Lutherse Kerk – also known as the Koepelkerk – rising above the snow-covered houses.
Description
Koster depicts the city beneath a dark, leaden sky, using a restrained palette of charcoal grey, icy blue, muted green and warm brown. Snow settles on the rooftops and moored boats, while its reflections enliven the dark water below. The free, confident brushwork gives the scene freshness and immediacy, while the monumental dome provides a strong and recognisable focal point.
We chose this work for its particularly convincing winter atmosphere and its balance between architectural presence and painterly freedom. Despite its predominantly dark palette, the touches of snow and colour in the boats give the composition remarkable vitality.
The painting is presented in a substantial wooden frame with a discreet gilt inner border. The frame is in good vintage condition and complements the work beautifully.
