Maurits de Groot (1880-1934). Dutch School, Early 20th Century. Rural Waterside Landscape – Oil on Canvas
A peaceful Dutch waterside landscape depicting a solitary woman beside a farmhouse, accompanied by a grazing sheep.
Description
A small boat rests quietly in the foreground, while tall, slender trees rise against a softly illuminated sky. The restrained palette of warm greens, browns, pale yellows and silvery greys gives the scene a gentle, atmospheric quality.
We chose this work for its beautiful sense of stillness, its balanced composition and the delicate contrast between the dark foreground and the luminous sky. The small human figure brings intimacy and narrative to the landscape without disturbing its tranquillity.
The painting is presented in a more recent Louis XV-style frame, made from wood with moulded ornamentation. Its pronounced corner cartouches, scrolling foliage and floral details give it an elegant Rococo character. Although not original to the painting, the frame complements it exceptionally well: its warm, softly aged gold finish enriches the earthy palette and enhances the light within the landscape.
