Early 19th-Century Empire Giltwood Frame, circa 1800–1810
An exceptionally elegant Empire-period frame, crafted in wood and enriched with finely moulded ornaments.
Description
Its broad, gently concave profile is animated by symmetrical corner decorations composed of scrolling acanthus leaves, rosettes and classical foliate motifs, while a delicate repeating border surrounds the inner opening.
The restrained architectural form, classical ornamentation and balanced symmetry are characteristic of the early Empire period. Its beautifully aged gilded surface has developed a rich, nuanced patina, giving the frame remarkable depth and historical presence.
