An atmospheric Parisian street scene evoking the elegance and lively rhythm of the Belle Époque. Beneath a softly illuminated evening sky, pedestrians, flower sellers and horse-drawn carriages animate a broad rain-washed boulevard.
Description
Painted with expressive, impressionistic brushwork, the composition is particularly successful in its treatment of light and movement. Mauve, blue-grey and rose tones fill the sky, while warm windows, colourful flowers and reflections across the wet pavement bring depth and vitality to the scene.
We chose this work for its wonderfully nostalgic atmosphere and rich narrative detail. Although the boulevard is busy, the softly diffused light gives the painting a poetic, almost dreamlike quality. The result is decorative and romantic, while remaining beautifully balanced.
The painting is presented in the substantial ornate gallery frame shown in the photographs. Its rich wood finish and restrained gilt detailing complement the architecture and warm tones within the composition particularly well.
