Josef Santen (1926–1988). Dutch School. Still Life with Cherries and Knife – Oil on Canvas
A wonderfully atmospheric still life depicting a small group of dark red cherries arranged on a pale plate, with a knife resting diagonally across the composition.
Description
The rich crimson tones of the fruit stand out beautifully against the cool grey-blue, cream and muted brown shades of the surrounding fabrics. Painted with broad, expressive brushstrokes, the work combines careful observation with a distinctly modern sense of colour and composition. The softly suggested background and loosely painted textiles give the scene depth, while the glossy cherries form a strong and intimate focal point.
We chose this particular work for its quiet, moody elegance and beautifully restrained palette. Although Josef Santen is particularly known for his portraits and figurative paintings, he also painted landscapes and still lifes in an expressive naturalistic style. This intimate composition reveals the same sensitivity to atmosphere and colour found throughout his work.
Josef Santen was a Dutch painter active in Amsterdam and Haarlem. He studied under the Haarlem artist Henri Frédéric Boot and was closely connected with the city’s artistic community. His paintings are characterised by expressive handling, strong observation and a subtle sense of atmosphere. (RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History)
The painting is presented in the substantial vintage dark wooden frame shown in the photographs. Its carved detailing and discreet gilt inner edge complement the subdued colours of the composition particularly well.
