Late 19th-Century Oval Gilded Frame in the Barbizon Style
A substantial yet exceptionally elegant oval frame from the late 19th century.
Description
Built on a wooden structure with moulded ornament, it retains its original gilding and a beautiful aged patina.
The decoration unfolds in concentric bands. A leafy outer border, punctuated by ribbon-like crossings, surrounds a broad band of deeply modelled acanthus foliage. Further inward, a finely defined Greek-key border introduces a geometric rhythm, balanced by smooth mouldings and a delicate beaded edge around the opening. These alternating decorative and plain surfaces give the frame depth while allowing the painting room to breathe.
The warm gilding catches the light across the raised ornament, while darker recesses emphasise its relief. Despite its considerable size and 9 cm depth, the oval shape and carefully balanced decoration lend it remarkable elegance.
Selected for its original finish, rich ornament and generous proportions, it would provide a distinguished setting for a portrait or another suitably proportioned work.
