Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna (1886–1975). Portrait of a Peasant Woman — Oil on Cardboard
A remarkably expressive portrait attributed to Romanian painter Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna (1886–1975), an artist particularly celebrated for his depictions of rural life and the people of the Romanian countryside.
Description
The elderly woman is portrayed with extraordinary immediacy. Her weathered face emerges through vigorous, heavily worked brushstrokes, while the muted greens, ochres, earthy browns and warm red tones give the composition both strength and tenderness.
We chose this particular work for precisely that quality. There is something deeply human in the woman’s expression: tired perhaps, but dignified and remarkably present. Seen closely, the substantial impasto becomes an essential part of the portrait; individual strokes remain clearly visible across the face, headscarf and clothing, giving the surface an almost sculptural character.
The painting is presented in the vintage gilded wooden frame shown in the photographs. The frame is not original to the work, but we chose to retain it because its aged gold finish and generous proportions complement the earthy palette and expressive character of the painting particularly well.
