Suze Bisschop-Robertson (1855–1922). Portrait of an Elderly Woman – Oil on Canvas
A powerful and deeply expressive portrait of an elderly woman by Suze Bisschop-Robertson.
Description
The sitter emerges from a dark, restrained background, her face constructed with vigorous brushwork and strong contrasts of light and shadow. The direct gaze, firmly modelled features and earthy palette give the portrait an almost monumental presence despite its intimate dimensions.
We chose this work for the remarkable strength of its expression and for Robertson’s uncompromising approach to portraiture. The painting has an emotional and pictorial intensity that is difficult to capture fully in photographs and is considerably more impressive when viewed in person.
Suze Robertson was one of the most important Dutch women artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Independent and unconventional, she repeatedly chose farmers, workers and, especially, women as her subjects. Her work is recognised for its dark tonalities, forceful handling of paint and raw, honest observation of everyday life. Today, her paintings and drawings are held in major Dutch museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum and Kunstmuseum Den Haag.
The painting is presented in a substantial, finely made ebonised wooden frame of very good quality. Its deep moulded profile complements the sombre palette and gives the small portrait an imposing architectural presence.
